"I don't want the drink as bad as you do," Danny replied, and it was as much a pointed remark as it was a challenge. It had been a long time, but he knew what happened when he pushed Hex. He knew, and he wanted it.

If they were going to burn, it ought to be a damn good blaze.

That uncomfortable flutter of nerves hit Danny again, and he was surprised by how hard it was to shake them off before nodding and following after Jack. He'd done this so many times, why was this any different? Perhaps because it had been so long, that was all he could think as he brushed the feelings away and found a smile.

The tree wasn't amazing, but it was a tree, and they'd made an effort by covering it in toys from Tesco and Poundland. It was only about Danny's height, with an old fashioned angel on top- But it was the first Christmas in a long time where Danny had found himself actually eager to celebrate. Not just passively observe from the sidelines.

He had money now, the money Scottie had left him, and so he'd bought Hex some gifts. ...More importantly, he was sober, and back on his meds. He looked better for it as well, less gaunt and pale now than he'd been only a few weeks ago.

Slipping out of bed early, he'd set about slipping gifts under the tree and even made some eggs and toast. The radio was on, playing Christmas music, courtesy of the BBC, and on the telly was a fake fire, giving off the illusion of warmth.

He'd been having nightmares again. Not that they had ever truly stopped, those bad dreams laced with images of the staged room and the trunk. They had never truly left him, they'd just become less frequent. However, ever since Halloween, they were back in full force, with friends now, even. There were new nightmares now, nightmares starring the... The thing he'd seen that night. The strange vision wearing Alex's flesh. A frightening hallucination surely painted by a rough night out, and a tumble back into bad habits and pills.

He'd been doing so well, he'd been looking after himself, but- Ever since that night, he'd been slipping. He did his best to put on a good show for Hex, but when the other man worked the night shift, Danny was back at the bars and the clubs. There were little baggies hidden in his cigarette packs, and dark circles under his eyes. He'd lost weight again, slipping from trim to gaunt, and more than once he'd forgotten to take his meds.

He was a mess, and though he hid it fairly well, he knew it couldn't last. Hex likely already knew something was wrong, it was only a matter of time before it all came crumbling down around him, Just one more fuck up to add to the pile.

It was late, well after midnight, and Danny sat in the middle of the living room floor, half naked and shaking. He'd taken... he'd taken two of the blue and one of the pinks, and that wasn't right. That definitely wasn't right, was it? No, it was... It was supposed to be the other way around. ...Definitely. His heart was going a million miles a minute, and Hex was due home any moment. He just needed to come down. He just needed to come down and go to bed, and then everything would be fine. Hex wouldn't have to know, and tomorrow he'd do better. Tomorrow he'd- He'd stop. Tomorrow he'd do right. He could fix this, he could be better.

He felt cold, and his hands shook as he looked at the last pill in the bag, his paranoia getting the best of him.

They tampered with it.
He thought. They did it to Scotty, why not you? They already got you once... It's poison. You took poison.

That's what he had himself convinced of as he lay down on the rug, like a man settling into his grave. The drugs were just drugs though. Not poisoned, not tampered with. ...Just too much for his fragile system to take.

Danny was stone still for a moment, but eventually moved to cover Hex's hand with his own. He honestly wasn't sure what to say. So much had happened, so much had changed. In the end he settled on something simple.

"I wasn't gone forever, I just- I had things I needed to at least try and settle," he said softly.

"I packed to stay, remember? Wasn't planning on vanishing in the middle of the night," Danny replied with a slightly cheeky smile.

"Let me take my pill, I'll meet you up there. Give you a chance to set the mood," he added, stealing one more kiss and then moving to fetch his overnight bag.

Looking over at the sound of Hex's voice, Danny sighed, getting onto the train anyway. The car was empty, something that would usually be a rare treat, but now only made it impossible for Danny to hide from the other man.

The unforgiving wood against his shoulders, the sharp sting of teeth- This was what he needed. ...Or maybe it wasn't, maybe it was just an easy escape. Danny didn't care, he just knew he wanted to feel something other than desperation, fear, or loneliness. He wanted to feel good. He wanted to believe, for a brief moment, that things would be fine- Or, at the very least, forget how shit the world was.

He gave Hex a light shove, even as he chased his lips with his own, urging him on, trying to claw his way back to a time where this had been who he was.

"That it? That all you have?" he asked, pushing Hex harder, shoving him back against a narrow table that stood in the hall, home to a lamp and a silver coloured eiffel tower replica. Both rocked, but neither fell as Danny tried to grab Hex's wrists and kiss him harder.

This should have been their first Christmas. It was all he could think about every time he spotted a trimmed tree or a bloke dressed as Santa. This should have been a happy time- And happy as he was to spend another holiday with Scotty, he couldn't help but be slightly heartbroken by it all.

Sara had tried to get him out of bed, but Danny had seen no reason- And soon he was home alone, under the covers and wondering when the pain would just stop. When he would finally move on. ...He had to move on, didn't he? He was still so young, there had to be life after Alex. There had to be.

There was a knock on the door, and he sighed as he pulled the covers over his head.

"No one's home!" he called out, unaware the front door was unlocked and partially open still. Sara wasn't good about locking up.

"Why didn't you tell me? I found one of your pills."

His heart had skipped a beat as Sara had held the pill out to him. He knew what it was. Knew too well, actually. Though it wasn't his. He wasn't...

He wasn't.

Except the people who'd hurt Alex, the people he'd upset, they had incredible power. They could do anything- Was it so far out of the realm of possibility that they could infect him?

He wanted to believe there was a limit- Not only to what they could do, but the lines they would cross. He held onto that hope as he sat in a small room, waiting for the nurse to come and test his blood. ...To prove to himself that he was still clean. That he wasn't positive.
