Christmas - Hex

The tree wasn't amazing, but it was a tree, and they'd made an effort by covering it in toys from Tesco and Poundland. It was only about Danny's height, with an old fashioned angel on top- But it was the first Christmas in a long time where Danny had found himself actually eager to celebrate. Not just passively observe from the sidelines.
He had money now, the money Scottie had left him, and so he'd bought Hex some gifts. ...More importantly, he was sober, and back on his meds. He looked better for it as well, less gaunt and pale now than he'd been only a few weeks ago.
Slipping out of bed early, he'd set about slipping gifts under the tree and even made some eggs and toast. The radio was on, playing Christmas music, courtesy of the BBC, and on the telly was a fake fire, giving off the illusion of warmth.

Not only do I not believe in them- It's not even a nice idea.
A sadness flickered across Danny's features, and he stepped closer again, resting his head against Hex's chest as he held him tightly. He'd loved Alex, would always love Alex, but Hex was special. Hex filled a void in him he'd been certain would never be full again.
Not a nice idea?
Pressing his lips against Hex's shoulder, Danny inhaled deeply, as though desperate to memorise the scent of him. He wanted that scent embedded deep into his mind, to make certain he never forgot it. Sometimes he wished he'd done that with Alex, somehow managed to etch every last detail and word spoken into his mind. He'd fixated on so many little details, and yet as time passed, too many of them started to fade from his mind a bit. Just the little things, tiny details that had once been so painfully important , but had been gently pushed aside to make room for memories of new things. New people. It felt like a betrayal to forget a single moment they'd shared, but time was cruel like that. It stole so much from you as it passed.
That there's just one other person out there for you? The 'perfect partner'? What are the odds this person would be in the same country, the same city? That your paths would cross? It would mean almost everyone in the world is with the wrong person.
His breath hitched, but it wasn't sadness that moved him. Emotions were so rarely that straight forward and singular.
If it's a way of saying 'we're good together', why not just say, 'we're good together'? But if you mean it literally...
Reaching up, he caught Hex's face in his hands and kissed him hard, again.
You think there are better people out there for you?
There might be, for both of us. But since we don't know them, it's just a theoretical.
