The tree wasn't amazing, but it was a tree, and they'd made an effort by covering it in toys from Tesco and Poundland. It was only about Danny's height, with an old fashioned angel on top- But it was the first Christmas in a long time where Danny had found himself actually eager to celebrate. Not just passively observe from the sidelines.
He had money now, the money Scottie had left him, and so he'd bought Hex some gifts. ...More importantly, he was sober, and back on his meds. He looked better for it as well, less gaunt and pale now than he'd been only a few weeks ago.
Slipping out of bed early, he'd set about slipping gifts under the tree and even made some eggs and toast. The radio was on, playing Christmas music, courtesy of the BBC, and on the telly was a fake fire, giving off the illusion of warmth.
