Looking over at the sound of Hex's voice, Danny sighed, getting onto the train anyway. The car was empty, something that would usually be a rare treat, but now only made it impossible for Danny to hide from the other man.

"Let me cook for you. Unless you're dying for take away, let's go back to mine and I'll make something proper. And we can talk while I cook?" Hex asked, reaching down to take Danny's hand in his as they walked.

"Yeah? ...Yeah, alright. If you're sure you don't mind," Danny nodded, looking down at their hands and smiling.

"See, that's one thing you need to know about me. I love to cook. No trouble and given the choice I'd rather be in the kitchen. What sounds good? I might have supplies..." he said.

"Oh I don't mind, honestly. Anything," Danny insisted. "Whatever you feel like making."

He checked his pockets as he spoke, making sure he'd brought his pillbox, and relaxing when he found it.

"We can make a night of it. I'll cook and we can watch Netflix. You could stay if you like," he said hopefully.

"I only have enough pills for tonight, I'd have to get home really early," Danny replied. "But I could stay, if you don't mind that."

"I'll get up early to hit the gym before work so that's fine," he nodded. "I could get you one of those cases you load for a week so you won't get caught out if you like. We just hand them out."

"Nah, I'll never carry something that big with me," Danny admitted. "I only have this one 'cause it's on my keyring. Used to use it for, um, other things."

"Other sorts of pills?" Hex asked lightly, without judgment.

"Yeah," Danny replied with an awkward laugh. "Suppose it's fair you know that about me. I I did a lot of drugs before Alex. Still do now and then, just- not like before."

"It's not something I mind. I know I'm sober but I'm not holier-than-thou or anything. Not everyone has a problem with addiction. In fact, most people can do it and have fun and have no problems," he said. "...Just in case you were curious about my opinion."

"I forget sometimes, you know, that you're straight- I mean, in that sense," Danny clarified with a nervous laugh.

"I don't drink. I don't do drugs because of me job and it's more important to me than having a bit of fun. And, I won't lie, I'm a bit scared that with my problems with drink that I'd be more likely to be an addict," he admitted.

"No, I understand, you don't have to explain it," Danny assured him. "I worry sometimes, about the harder stuff. I've seen it take its toll, and nearly done some really stupid shit just for a little hit."

"I see the harder stuff in A&E and I'd never do it. Heroin is terrible. And meth. And there's new things every day," he said. "It's sad how it destroys people."

"Dunno how you do it, face that sort of misery head on everyday," Danny confessed.

"It's not all misery. And it's really satisfying when you save a life. When you help someone and they come out better than they came in. And the best part is the babies. Every now and again we can't get a mum to labor and delivery fast enough so we have to catch. It's amazing," he said.

"I suppose that must balance it out a bit," Danny smiled. "It's nice you love your job- I don't think I've ever been happy at any of mine."

"If you could do anything, what would make you happy?" Hex asked. "If it wasn't about money but just about what you liked and what you were good at, what would it be?"

"I don't honestly know- I never thought about it that much," Danny admitted. "I was always so focused on finding love or a good time."

"You're not getting any younger," he teased. "Maybe it's time to give it some thought. What was your last job again? The one that sacked you?"

"Warehouse job for a shipping company," Danny replied. "It was shit, but the pay was fine."

"I really hope Stanley can find you something. Even a boom position would pay better than that, and it's easy work," Hex said.

"Would be really nice to have steady work again," Danny confessed. "I miss feeling like I could pay my own way."

"You know I don't mind, right? I like treating you and I've got the dosh wot with me YouTube revenue. And if you need a loan for groceries or something I know you're good for it," he offered.
