The trip took much longer than he'd hoped, and he'd been right in assuming he'd wind up taking a ship back. That would have been fine, except the damn thing had sunk  miles out from the shore, forcing him and the other passengers to struggle to shore on planks and leaky lifeboats.

He'd done it though, all without losing a single item from House's order.

He was feeling victorious- Until only a few hours into the last leg of his trip back he'd begun coughing and his body shakey and unsteady by the time he reached Greg's door and began to knock.

"Good," House said. "And now that that's settled, you want to tell me why they're after you?"

The thing was, House didn't like many people. So when he decided he liked someone it took a lot to change his mind, and it hadn't even occurred to him that Danny might tell him something he didn't want to hear.

Danny was silent for a beat, then wet his lips before speaking.

"My lover was a mage. An artificer as well, like you. He developed a stone that could force people to be truthful without them knowing they were being charmed," he explained.

"He... He's dead now, but I have it. I was the only person he trusted to keep it."

House blinked at him. Sure for a second that he was fucking with him. He'd heard rumors (which honestly he hadn't really believed), but even then they weren't widespread rumor, just passed between artificers, and there's no reason Danny would know about that unless...

"You're telling me that the veracity stone is real, and your lover created it. And you have it? Like actually have it?"

Danny hesitated for a long moment, then pulled the stone out from where it rested under his nightshirt on a long cord around his neck.

House's eyes darted to it. "Have you used it?"

He couldn't tell from here whether it was the real deal or not, but he thought he'd work up to insisting that Danny let him study it.

"No, god no," Danny replied.

"Can I examine it?" House asked, holding out his hand. "I'll be careful."

Danny held it tight, reluctant to let it go.

"I don't know..." he said quietly.

House looked at him for a second and then said, "I'll be honest with you. I'm not convinced it's real. I just want to see if I can detect the magic in it."

Danny hesitated a little longer, then reluctantly held it out for House to see.

House reached out and touched it.

And immediately felt the magic.

He pulled his hand away. "You have no idea how much I want to like... dissect this."

"Please don't," Danny said as he tucked it away.

"It's quite a coincidence that you've ended up in the company of another artificer," House said, leaning back in his chair again. "Any chance I knew him?"

"His name was Alex. ...Actually, his name was Alister. He hated that name though," Danny said quietly.

House blinked at him.

"Wait, Alex was your boyfriend?"

It wasn't like there was a long list of powerful artificers. House hadn't known him well, but he certainly knew who he was. He'd met him. And he'd heard he was dead.

"He was. Yes," Danny said softly. "He was... He was special."

House rubbed the back of his neck, looking awkward. "Well uh. Sorry.... for your loss, I mean. I didn't know him really. Met him once or twice. He seemed... sharp."

"He was remarkable," Danny said softly, wrapping his arms around himself.

House looked uncomfortable. "Well look. Even if I didn't already like you I'd help you under these circumstances. I sure as fuck don't want that stone getting into the wrong hands. Okay?"

Danny nodded a little, then sighed.

"I think he wanted me to destroy it, but- I can't. It's the last part of him still here. He's gone, but his magic is in this stone. A bit of it, at least."

"No, don't destroy it," House said immediately. "I mean, it's... an incredibly impressive piece of magic."

"It's dangerous," Danny countered.

[drfeelbad]

"Well yes," said House. "Most very impressive magic is."

[london_spy]

"He thought it might ruin the balance in the realms," Danny explained, tucking it away and looking uneasy.

"It's safe with me though."

"Do you have ways to protect yourself?" House asked. "Weapons? Spells?"
