John
Danny had been thinking about texting John all day, but as the sun vanished beyond the horizon he finally sat down on the edge of the bed with his phone. He wrote a message- Then deleted it. Then another, which he also deleted.
Finally he wrote something he didn't hate.
Come over.
Two words, nothing more. He just hoped John replied.

Danny smiled, curling up closer and slipping an arm around John.
"I didn't want to assume," he said softly.

John held him close, sleep warring with his urge to light up.
"Want to get breakfast before school in the morning?" John asked casually.
no subject
"Sure," Danny smiled. "I'd like that."
no subject
"Good," he smiled. The weight and warmth of the man started to drag him down and soon he had forgotten about smoking as sleep clawed at him.
A soft snore crept out and surprised him awake again.

Danny was already dozing off, his weight growing heavier where he'd settled in against John as his mind drifted off to sleep.

But dawn began to lighten the horizon and he rolled away from the window.
John! Help me!
Astra's voice cut right through him. And then the shriek of the universe as the demon dragged her away.
John! Help me! Save me, John!
He ran for her and followed her through the portal. John reached out to catch her and she strained to reach for him, but it seemed as if John was standing still. No matter how he tried, he couldn't close the distance.
And then Astra was gone and the dread and the guilt that he carried weighed him down, making it hard to breathe. A clawed hand snagged at his thgh. Another gripped his ankle. John fought the hold, but another snatched his arm and yet another began to pull the back of his coat. Looking around all he could see were teeth and claws and eyes. Horrible, burning eyes. Claws dug in, he could feel his muscles tearing apart. He could feel the way his body strained against it.
John sat up with a panicked cry and panted as he made sense of the real world. Grey dawn. Danny's room. It was fine. It was all fine.
But his heart was racing and he began to cough...
And once he started, he couldn't stop.

Startled, Danny woke and sat up. It took a beat for his brain to register what was happening, but he was soon out of bed and fetching John a glass of water.
"Hey, here, try and take a drink," he said, rubbing the other man's back as he sat down beside him.

Deep, soul-shaking coughs wracked his body and he struggled to recover. He could taste blood in his mouth and he was motivated to keep that awful little detail well away from Danny.
He calmed enough to sip the water and then managed a few slow breaths.
"I'm sorry I woke you," he mumbled. A beat later he was putting the glass aside so he could get up.

"It's fine. ...That cough isn't though. Maybe you should see a doctor? I could talk to Greg..." he offered awkwardly.
no subject
"Its nothing anyone can fix, Danny. It really just sounds terrible It's...fine," he said as he tugged his trousers up.
no subject
Danny didn't look convinced, but he let it be for now.

His trousers hung low on his hips and he scrubbed a hand through his hair.
"I'm going to step out on the porch," he said, because clearly having a cigarette after all that was a brilliant idea.
He just really needed to get that taste out of his mouth.

It felt like no matter what, John was set on not letting him in- And maybe that was good. Maybe it was best that one of them had a wall up. It would keep this casual.
Still, it made breakfast seem far less appealing.
Danny grabbed a shower and got dressed, set on telling John that he'd forgotten he needed to head to class early today.

John had moved some furniture and hand planted himself right in the middle. When Danny emerged, sooner than John had guessed, the warlock had his hand up controlling a spinning circle of fire. Bright red eyes glowed from the dark portal inside the ring.
"You're bloody useless," he said and slashed his arm to make the portal vanish.
no subject
Danny stood frozen in the doorway, visibly startled.
"I- I have to go to class early today," he said finally. "...Library book," he added, though he was still staring at where the portal had been a moment ago.
"...Are you bleeding?" he asked finally. "Maybe don't do stuff like that on the rug? I don't think I can afford a new one right now."
It was a mixture of shock and just... No, no it was all shock, actually, but Danny did his best to play it off.

John's head snapped round.
Fuck
"You, ah...said you wanted to know everything..." he started, unsure of where to go with that.
no subject
"I do, but maybe- Maybe not in the middle of my living room?" Danny said quietly.
"...I have to go to class early," he said again, but this time his tone was different. It was nervous.
no subject
John huffed a tiny, understanding breath.
"You said," he nodded. "I'll just get dressed and get out. I'll, uh, text you? I've got to go up north for a few days."
no subject
"Okay," Danny said awkwardly, wondering if John had any intention to actually text him. ...Or come back.
no subject
"S'what that phone call to Hell was," he explained sheepishly, nodding toward where the ring had been. "I had a dream, see..."
no subject
"You don't have to explain," Danny said awkwardly. "I don't... If you tell me, I'll worry, or I'll follow, and we both know that's not a good idea. If it was, getting you to share this stuff wouldn't usually be like pulling teeth."
no subject
"I'll explain anything you want, Danny. Best I can, anyway," he said. "Look, let me get dressed and go. I can tell I've gone a bridge too far here. I really didn't think you'd be out of the shower so fast."
no subject
"It's fine. ...I mean, actually, no, I don't like the idea of you 'calling hell' from my living room, honestly. But it's- It's something maybe we need to talk about in the future."
no subject
"Heart to heart when I get back?" John offered, moving toward the bedroom to get his clothes.
no subject
"Yeah, alright," Danny nodded, scratching the back of his neck. "Raincheck on breakfast too."
